| Notes | This is the most recent version of a classic book. I already have a copy of the Third Edition and was wondering if there would be any significant changes to the content form the third edition to make it worth reading. The answer is a resounding YES. There is much new content for the avid reader and some interesting ideas, such as the Central Govenor Model, that will appeal to anyone with a basic background in science. For anyone who hasn't seen this book before it is a hefty volume and covers everything to do with long distance running, in particular marathon and ultra running. There is far too much to read in one go, and not everyone will want to read every chapter, but it should be on every runners bookshelf waiting to be read whenever you have the desire to get more from your running. The only negative I would have about this edition is that it only has a single, brief, contents page. Often you want to refer to something you read before and it can be difficult to find the relevant page. Contents I Physiology and Biochemistry of Running Ch1 Muscle Structure and Function Ch2 Oxygen Transport and Running Economy Ch3 Energy Sytems and Running Performance Ch4 Temperature Regulation During Exercise II Training Basics Ch5 Developing a Training Foundation Ch6 Learning from the Experts Ch7 Avoiding Overtraining Ch8 Training the Mind III Transferring Training to Racing Ch9 10K to Half-Marathon Ch10 Marathon Ch11 Ultramarathon Ch12 Pushing the Limits of Performance IV Running Health Ch13 Ergogenic Aids Ch14 Staying Injury Free Ch15 Running and Your Health |
