Xerocomus communis(?)

(Xerocomus quercinus)

11th July 2003, Little Melton, Norfolk

First boletes of the season.

xerocomus030710_1a (10K) I counted just over thirty caps along this short section of roadside verge although there may have been more amongst the stingers! They were growing singly or in small tight groups of between 2 and 5. Some of them were completely white with mould so they must have been up for several days before I noticed them. The trees is an oak.
xerocomus030710_6a (19K) This is a picture of one of the larger ones. The cap diameter is about 5cm. When cut open the flesh at the base of the stipe was orange. The rest of the stipe flesh very slowly blued. All the other specimens I examined had orange dots in the base of the stipe as well.
xerocomus030710_7a (15K) The cap colour is brown with reddish tints. Some smaller and immature specimens were much darker brown (as in the cap edge on the picture below) without much red. This makes me think they are much more likely to be X.communis rather than X.rubellus. Most of the larger caps had fine cracking, just about visible in the picture.
xerocomus030710_8a (19K) The stipe is almost completely lacking any red colouration.
