Two of these were found below a bridge across the river. Presumably they had been thrown off and had broken on the brick walls below. Cattle graze the river meadow right up to the bridge and there was a cow pat just a few feet from the glass fragments.
The other two were on the grass verge and had been crushed when the grass was mown. By the looks of it they had been run over by the tractor.
And yes, it does take a long time to pick up all those little bits.

A short walk from my house on any day of the year produces a similar amount. The contents may vary, but the local footpaths, verges, ditches and hedgerows yield a never ending supply.
